Seppa 切羽 (Spacers) - Japanese Sword Parts
The Seppa (spacers) are two thin plates that are put on both sides of the Tsuba to ensure the tightness of the mounted pieces of the Katana. In other words it is located on the right and left of the tsuba. The Katana Seppa is considered as important Japanese sword fittings because it acts as shock absorber when the sword comes in contact with its target.
Seppa are usually made of Copper and available also silver, black and gold plated to give the sword an exquisite touch and they come in pairs. The Thickness of Seppa is determined by the polishing. It is recommended that the twin spacers have the same thickness.
